Life and Death |
They feed mostly on insects and other small invertebrates. They sometimes come on land to feed on terrestrial prey such as worms. Toads can be found anywhere from suburban backyards to the deep wilderness. They require shallow bodies of water for breeding and moist soil for burrowing and for hibernating. |
|
Males and females will meet up in the spring to breed. The male will emit a prolonged, trilling call. One can hear a loud chorus call from gathering males in a breeding pond. The females come to the call, deposit their eggs, and depart within days. The eggs are laid in long strands on the bottom of a pond or in vegetation. The new tadpoles hatch, grow quickly, transform within 2 months, and will disperse shortly thereafter. They will be eaten by anything larger than them, such as snakes, and birds. |

That's Amazing |
- Their thick skin aids them on land by reducing water loss.
- During winter, toads may dig to depths of more than a meter.
- One does not get warts from toads, the warts come from human viruses. The bumpy skin on a toad is to help them camouflage and the toad's paratoidal glands secrete a poison on animals in order for protection. This secretion only causes minor skin irritations to humans.
