Hal was acquired December 18, 2002. Hal was at a rehabilitation centre in Sault St. Marie, Ontario, where he was brought in with a severely injured wing. The damage could not be repaired and Hal's wing had to be amputated, making it impossible for him to return to the wild. Hal will now live out his years here with his new found friends, Sarah, Izumi and Thorondor. |

Although the bald eagle's primary food source is fish, they will also catch rodents, deer, mammals and even feed on carrion. Because of their diet, bald eagles can be found living around large bodies of water. They build a nesting platform called an aerie that may be 4.5 m (15 ft) across and 6 m (20 ft) deep and weigh as much as 1800 kg (2 tons or 4000 lbs). |

Bald eagles become sexually mature at 5 years of age. The breeding season for these monogomous birds starts in November and ends in April (depending on location). The female usually lays 2 white to pale blue eggs and 35 days later they hatch. The young fledge out at 10-11 weeks old and only 1 chick normally survives to maturity. These giant birds are at the top of the food chain, with humans being their only threat. |
